Bonsaify | Developing Root-Over-Rock Japanese Black Pine Bonsai

This video picks up where Eric’s recent video, “Japanese Black Pine Root-Over-Rock Creation” (https://youtu.be/CCFXYv2eUew) ended: after creating a root-over-rock bonsai composition, what comes next? He demonstrates the next steps on a pine nearing the end of its third year of growth, including a start on exposing some of the roots on a tree 1 year after potting.

00:01:02 Eric doesn’t want to expose the roots to quickly and risk killing off smaller roots, so he “opens up” the pot (2 1-gallon cans) to check.

00:02:20 Let the loose soil fall away to see if there are any gaps between the roots and the rock – need to make the composition more solid-looking.

00:04:08 Eric cuts back more of the container and can now see some feeder roots.

00:05:42 Eric ties the roots down with raffia so they grip the rock more closely.

00:06:50 Why Eric is also using chopsticks to move some roots.

00:09:14 Same procedure on other side of the composition and a close-up.

00:11:30 Analyzing potential fronts to optimize further growth of the tree. Will this be a medium or large tree?

00:13:40 Adding movement to a potential trunk extension.

00:15:06 Eric explains his wiring and movement choices; basically, leaving himself more choices for the future.

00:16:50 Why this entire operation is important and shouldn’t be skipped.
